I’m terrible at New Year’s Resolutions, just like basically everyone else on the planet. This is probably due to the combination of 1. not really putting a lot of effort into what I’m resolving to do (work out more! stop snacking so poorly! be…better in general!) and 2. putting ridiculous parameters on those goals (don’t just work out – do 3 different types of classes every week no matter how tired you are! buy super organic specially made and probably way-too-expensive snacks).

Enter my early January discovery of Lara Casey’s Making Things Happen in 2013 posts. (I linked to her most recent MTH post about Encouraging Others, and at the bottom of THAT post she links to all of the Making Things Happen posts from this year so they’re easy to find!)

I started a few days behind good ol’ January 1, but I’m LOVING the motivation her posts have given me to get my butt into gear this year (and not just exercise-wise, as the above examples may indicate). The basic premise is to help you come up with actionable goals instead of “resolutions”. I really like that a lot of the early “steps” involve a lot of reflection and writing out what did and didn’t work before, and there’s also a lot of WHY you want to change or continue on with different goals. And all of that is before you even START doing things.

This is true...but so hard for me to do! Definitely been working on it.

Needless to say it’s taken me a little bit to get sorted out and organized -holy cow did the CLEARING THE CLUTTER step take me AGES since I’ve been a clutter bug for basically most of my life – but I’ve slowly started to work on more of the DOING stages of 2013. That includes working more on this poor, neglected little blog of mine (if anyone at all has stuck with me you’ll notice a few aesthetic changes, with hopefully some more tweaks down the line).

To help stay organized this year/keep better track of my goals, I also indulged in a bit of a nerdy splurge – Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner!

So pretty...

So pretty…

Haven’t filled it with much yet, but I already LOVE it

I’m really trying to be more proactive and excited to try some new things this year and make myself a little bit better. I’ve definitely taken “progress not perfection” to heart and am trying to stop being so in my head and get out in some new adventures this year!

Here’s hoping to staying on this bandwagon throughout the year, and not tumbling off in like…a month 😉

Since being back in LA, I have basically started Spring Cleaning a couple of months early. There’s spring-like weather in Los Angeles right now though, and that coupled with Changing-for-the-New-Year mentality makes it seem to work out all right.

First up, as some who may have talked to me or follow me on Twitter know, was the Great Closet Clean-out of 2011. To be perfectly honest, even though I cleaned out my wardrobe before I moved across the country, I held onto WAY too many items from high school or early college that had some kind of sentimental value or that I just felt I couldn’t get rid of for one reason or another.

After 4 almost full days of pulling out EVERYTHING I own and trying it ALL on (can we all groan together on this one? because that was a draining process, let me tell you…) I boxed up a bunch of stuff and carted it off to Good Will.

Step One — complete!!

After being gone for practically a month, I came back realizing that my closet wasn’t the only thing I had to clean. So in all the rest of my spare time (save a few days that were BEGGING me to go to Disneyland…oops?) I have been SCOURING my condo. Literally. It hasn’t helped that every time I vacuum, Gracie follows along behind me beheading stuffed toys and dragging their insides all over the living room.

My new favorite cleaning invention though, is this:

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers!

I’ve been using them to clean the grout in my tile floors, and get rid of weird marks on my walls left from my lovely puppy and they really are Magic.

The last major change has been a Spring Cleaning of myself…if that makes any sense. Really, what that means is I actually started going to an exercise class, which I’m really liking and really hoping to stick with, even when I start to get busier. It’s called Cardio Barre and it has been KICKING my butt, but it really is fantastic. It’s this crazy combo of free weights and ballet barre exercises with a little yoga mixed in, and it makes you sore for days.  I’m making a more concerted effort to get a little more toned and be a little healthier in general (not that I’m THAT bad to begin with, but I am trying to cook more from scratch etc…)

To be honest, I’m taking a page out of Miss Katie’s (of Marriage Confessions) playbook and trying to Bloom Where I’m Planted. I LOVE LA, and that has never really been a problem, but I always felt so so busy with everything I was doing right from the start that I haven’t really expanded into the area yet as much as I could be — taking classes in the area, meeting more people, just getting out there. So far, I think I’m off to a pretty good start this year 😉

AND I’ve been getting in some quality Disney time to boot — including seeing one of my VERY best friends Erin and her husband Mike the past couple of days (I may just have to blog about it once I get pictures loaded.)

Stress Reliever

I’m not entirely sure of the cause, but I can tell I’m getting stressed about something going on lately. I’ve been excessively tired the past few days. I can feel myself sort of clenching my teeth, and occasionally my jaw hurts when I wake up. Both of those can also be affected by caffeine, but I’ve really been working to limit myself to on average 1 caffeinated beverage a day (sometimes 0, very occasionally 2), so I don’t think that’s really the issue.

I’ve been working on a couple of ways to unwind, though, that have definitely been helping a little bit.

My very good friend from college, Arden, was huge on manicures, especially during “talky” tv shows (i.e. Gilmore Girls) where you didn’t have to necessarily WATCH the show (like you do for, say, Lost, especially) to enjoy it. So, extra Fall-esque manicure it is!

I’ve also started sketching pretty regularly again, which was always a favorite hobby of mine growing up, and something that fell by the wayside (which I’ve talked about some before). As I’ve mentioned before though, nothing makes me happier at a Disney park than doing an art class at the Magic of Animation (a carousel is a close #2) so I’m glad I’m getting back into it, much like this blog partially started as a kick in the pants to write more. Some recent sketches:

A more detailed sketch - Ariel!

Between these little things, a renewed effort to work out, and a bubble bath in my future, I’m hoping I get out of this funk soon! Grey’s Anatomy should help tonight too! And maybe I’ll dig out more of my old drawing books … 🙂
