I’m terrible at New Year’s Resolutions, just like basically everyone else on the planet. This is probably due to the combination of 1. not really putting a lot of effort into what I’m resolving to do (work out more! stop snacking so poorly! be…better in general!) and 2. putting ridiculous parameters on those goals (don’t just work out – do 3 different types of classes every week no matter how tired you are! buy super organic specially made and probably way-too-expensive snacks).
Enter my early January discovery of Lara Casey’s Making Things Happen in 2013 posts. (I linked to her most recent MTH post about Encouraging Others, and at the bottom of THAT post she links to all of the Making Things Happen posts from this year so they’re easy to find!)
I started a few days behind good ol’ January 1, but I’m LOVING the motivation her posts have given me to get my butt into gear this year (and not just exercise-wise, as the above examples may indicate). The basic premise is to help you come up with actionable goals instead of “resolutions”. I really like that a lot of the early “steps” involve a lot of reflection and writing out what did and didn’t work before, and there’s also a lot of WHY you want to change or continue on with different goals. And all of that is before you even START doing things.
This is true…but so hard for me to do! Definitely been working on it.
Needless to say it’s taken me a little bit to get sorted out and organized -holy cow did the CLEARING THE CLUTTER step take me AGES since I’ve been a clutter bug for basically most of my life – but I’ve slowly started to work on more of the DOING stages of 2013. That includes working more on this poor, neglected little blog of mine (if anyone at all has stuck with me you’ll notice a few aesthetic changes, with hopefully some more tweaks down the line).
To help stay organized this year/keep better track of my goals, I also indulged in a bit of a nerdy splurge – Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner!
Haven’t filled it with much yet, but I already LOVE it
I’m really trying to be more proactive and excited to try some new things this year and make myself a little bit better. I’ve definitely taken “progress not perfection” to heart and am trying to stop being so in my head and get out in some new adventures this year!
Here’s hoping to staying on this bandwagon throughout the year, and not tumbling off in like…a month 😉

Anyone who knows me is aware that I LOVE taking pictures. I’m also pretty addicted to my iPhone, and love trying out new tech finds.
Well imagine my surprise when one of my fav YouTubers ijustine showcased a product that combined my love of all of the above! The Olloclip.
It’s basically a little 3-lens combo that clips (duh) onto your iPhone and enhances its camera. I decided to get it with some birthday money and I have been in LOVE. Probably to the point of overusing the fisheye lens JUST A BIT.
(Fisheye examples #1, 2 and 1,375)
I like it bc of how supremely portable it is- this coming from someone who’s used to toting a giant dslr wherever she goes. Though I recently acquired a smaller Nikon J1 for Christmas (which I also love, despite it’s current malfunctioning 10-30mm lens…) I’ve found I like having something even more compact for spur of the moment pictures.
(Taken with the wide-angle lens option while at our fabulous Easter Brunch in Malibu)
And while the iPhone takes very clear, pretty pictures on a normal basis, I feel SLIGHTLY more photography-y (not a word, I know) when I’m using it.
Does anyone else use the Olloclip or any other device with their phones camera? It’s not being overly ridiculous to use both this AND the Instagram app, right? Good. Because you can’t take either away from meeeeee!

After the great success that was GlowFest this summer at Disney California Adventure, they decided to follow up with the fall/winter/maybe longer? event called ElecTRONica to celebrate the December release Tron: Legacy. From what I have heard, it is very similar to GlowFest — dancers, shows, good times by all. Only instead of outsourced crazy mohawked people, ElecTRONica is a neon blue, laserman-dancing, Flynn’s arcade-having wonderland.
I haven’t been (though I AM going soon! *so excited*) but I did see the Opening Ceremony they do around 6 PM each day that ElecTRONica is open (Friday-Sunday, mostly). It was pretty darn cool — really retro but also modern, and made me excited for the new movie, which I’m sure is part of the point.
I was so excited though, that I opened up my spiffy new iMovie 11 the other day and played around with the new Trailers feature, until I came up with THIS:
I’m actually pretty pleased with how it turned out — I’m by no means a video wizard, but the storyboard/shot list insert format makes it look fairly professional.
ElecTRONica: The Movie Trailer is just a glimpse until I can go hang out at DCA again and film ElecTRONica: The Movie.
Thank you Apple and Disney, for keeping my Geek flame burning. I’m now thoroughly convinced that my real life’s goal is to be Cameron Diaz in The Holiday, thanks to the two of you.
